Possible bus strike in Phoenix suburbs averted

PHOENIX (AP) -

Continuing negotiations are at least temporarily averting a possible bus strike in some of Phoenix's suburbs.

Valley Metro says there is no agreement so far. However, Valley Metro says its operator in southeastern suburbs and the bus workers union have agreed to resume negotiations Tuesday morning.

First Transit and a local of the Amalgamated Transit Union have agreed that bus service will run as scheduled through Tuesday.

They've been in negotiations since January on such issues as wages, benefits and work rules.

First Transit says the talks involved workers who operate 40 local, express and circulator routes primarily serving the southeastern suburbs.

Valley Metro says a work stoppage would affect bus service in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe as well as routes that travel into Phoenix and Scottsdale.
