FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - She's a woman and she is young, but Alison Lundergan Grimes said she's ready to take on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Lundergan Grimes, the Kentucky Secretary of State, announced Monday that she will run for U.S. Senate, giving Democrats a top challenger against McConnell in 2014.

To a room full of her supporters Lundergan Grimes said she took her time to make this decision and says Kentucky needs change. Lundergan Grimes, 34, was elected Secretary of State in 2011. A year and a half later she said  she would have never have thought she would be in the Senate race.

Politics runs in her blood. Lundergan Grimes is the daughter of former state Democratic Party chairman Jerry Lundergan.

Lundergan Grimes said her party reached out to her because they felt like she does have a chance against McConnell. Now in his fifth term, McConnell brings lots of seniority, along with lots of power and money as GOP leader.

The ads that we could see during this race could get ugly, but Lundergan Grimes said she isn't worried because she already proved an underdog could win the Secretary of State race and she has no fears now.

"His ads are based out of fear of losing his 30 year grip on power," said Lundergan Grimes. "This Kentucky woman does not believe the voters of Kentucky will be fooled that easily."

McConnell's office sent WAVE 3 News this statement:

"The next sixteen months will provide a great opportunity for Kentuckians to contrast a liberal agenda that promotes a war on coal families and government rationed health care with someone who works everyday to protect Kentuckians from those bad ideas."

Ultimately, it will be up to the voters to decide.
