Police are running tests on a lock of hair a fisherman pulled out of the Maumee River Saturday when his line got stuck. Family members say the chilling discovery may belong to their baby girl.
"When I saw the hair, I felt that maybe my worst thoughts were coming true and that it may not end up the way that I originally wanted," said Terry Steinfurth.
The family of baby Elaina says not searching on their own is not an option.
"I can't really do it because I still want to bring her home alive. I don't think she deserves what she's getting. She's too innocent. We just need her home," said Steinfurth.
Saturday's search led them back to the banks of the Maumee, where hair found by a fisherman was handed over to Toledo police. Currently, police are checking to see if the hair is actually human.
"Once we are able to determine what kind of hair it is, if it turns out to be human hair, then we will go a little further and do a DNA analysis to see if it matches up with baby Elaina," explained Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the TPD.
For the past month, questions on how slow things seem to be moving have been flying at Toledo police. They say bringing Elaina home safely is priority one.
"In this particular case, we've invested so much time and money. The last thing we want to do is jeopardize the integrity of the case by jumping the gun on something that may come back in the end to hurt the case," said Heffernan.
Police say they have been following up on leads, doing daily interrogations, even conducting polygraphs, trying to get to the bottom of this.
