BARREN COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – A man police said was pretending to be mentally handicapped in order to swindle money was in court Monday.

Gary Thompson had to be wheeled away for interrupting court proceedings twice before he pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct and mischief charges against him.

Thompson begged the judge to set him free, stating he suffered a leg injury. He went to Barren County from Lexington after a video of him begging went viral.

Thompson was sentenced to eight days in jail and is scheduled to be released on July 6.
