Suspect charged in armed robbery of cabbie

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Louisville taxi driver had a close call when he was robbed at gunpoint, but that cab driver helped police make an arrest.

According to Louisville Metro Police, early on the morning of June 5 Jamal Usan Wathal got into a cab on 17th Street, put a gun to the cab driver's head and demanded cash.

The arrest warrant states the cab driver was able to pick out Wathal from a police photo package.

Wathal, 20, was arrested by the LMPD VIPER unit in the 900 block of S. Hancock at 2 a.m. on July 3. He was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections on charges of robbery and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

The warrant says Wathal was in the home incarceration program for other pending robbery charges. Because of he left home without consent of the program, Wathal is also facing escape charges.
