LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Construction on the last phase of a nearly 4,000 acre park project began Wednesday.

Senator Mitch McConnell joined Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer to kick off the Parklands of Floyds Fork.

The final part of the expansive project will cover 2,400 acres of land in southeastern Jefferson County and will include walking trails, picnic areas and splash parks.

The Floyds Fork expansion is the largest parks expansion the city has seen since the construction of the Olmsted Park system in the early 1900s.

The project is expected to cost around $35 million and is expected to be complete by 2015.
