LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - With the changing world of technology, it's not often you see kids with their nose in a book.

But on Wednesday, after three weeks of hard work, 90 Atkinson Elementary and Westport Middle School students went on a shopping spree with University of Louisville and Jefferson County Public School administrators as part of the Summer Boost Program.

Teagan Mahony was present and she had some book bucks to spend. "Almost $80 worth of books," she said.

Teagan, who is going into 3rd grade, already knows about work ethic, "I work hard and do my work all the time and follow directions most of the time."

That hard work is how she earned all those Book Bucks which allowed her to buy anything she wanted at Barnes and Noble.

"I'm gonna look for the Among the Hidden books," she explained before she took off with volunteer Sarah Dakin.

She found her first pick, but with $80 to spend she got to keep looking - and not just for herself, she wanted to get books for others. "I picked Marilyn Monroe for my Mom," she said.

With a stack of books, Teagan will head to 3rd grade with a leg up on her classmates.

She explained, "If I read 20 minutes each day I think it will take me... for each book it will take me about a week."

"I teach high schoolers most of the time. In school we introduce a lot of books to kids, but Teagan was like, ‘Oh, I've been waiting for this book' or ‘I can't wait to read the next one in this series.'"  Dakin explained.

Teagan's face was full of excitement as she went to the bus with a bag of books so heavy she could barely carry.
