In celebration of the Fourth of July holiday, the Spirit of Springfield put on another show this year with the annual "Stars Spangled Springfield" event.
"It's just a wonderful family fun event down here. It highlights the city of Springfield," said Mayor Domenic Sarno.
Thousands headed to River Front Park in downtown Springfield to enjoy the festivities.
"I got a call yesterday from a woman from Plattsburgh, NY, who is coming down," said Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt.
Many dawned red, white and blue to show their American pride.
"I'm here to celebrate my freedom and America the beautiful. I love my country," said Springfield resident Rex Young.
A sea of lawn chairs covered the park as spectators listened to music from the Dan Kane Singers.
A special headliner this year was the legendary Motown band, The Commodores.
Along with the music and food, many people came for the main event.
"I've been seeing the fireworks for many years. Many Springfield natives come down to see the fireworks. It's a special occasion," said Springfield resident Lisa Cappabianca.
The famous Grucci Fireworks put on a dazzling display in the skies over Springfield.
"I love the colors in the sky, it gets me choked up," said Young.
"It's spectacular night," said Cappabianca.
It was a spectacular night indeed to mark the country's 237th birthday.
