LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Twelve red shouldered hawks were released back into the wild Saturday afternoon.

The hawks, cared for and raised since birth by volunteers from Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky, were released at Beckley Creek Park off Shelbyville Road.

Volunteers had worked with the at-risk birds, getting them ready for life in the wild, since the spring. It was an emotional moment for the volunteers whose hard work paid off.

The very vocal hawks feed on small rodents and amphibians.

Raptor Rehab said they've made a recent adaptation to living in residential areas so Beckley Park is the perfect habitat for the birds.
