FERN CREEK, KY (WAVE) – One day after being held up, employees at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant reopened the business to customers in Fern Creek.

On the same day, officers with Louisville Metro Police identified Carlos Runyon, of Newburg, as the suspect shot and killed by police Sunday following an attempted robbery and hostage situation at the restaurant.

"{We} saw the crime scene tape everywhere and the forensics vehicle and the cop car sitting out with the lights going," said Dr. Kirsten Ferguson of Fern Creek Chiropractic Center. "We knew that something had gone on."

According to officers, Runyon broke into the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Bardstown Road near Beulah Church Road in Fern Creek around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Police Chief Steve Conrad said when officers arrived on the scene they noticed shattered glass from a broken drive-thru window. When they looked inside, officers saw a man wearing a bandana and several employees being held hostage.

Chief Conrad said Runyon then grabbed a hostage and fled into a wooded area behind the KFC, leaving a trail of money on the ground as he ran.

According to police, the hostage was able to escape before Runyon began firing at officers in pursuit.

Chief Conrad said an officer shot Runyon after he engaged police in gun fire. Runyon was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a resident of Fern Creek and owner of a chiropractic center facing the restaurant, Dr. Ferguson said word of the botched robbery came as little surprise.

This kind of stuff happens in Fern Creek sometimes," said Dr. Ferguson. "There's been a couple of robberies over the years at Penn Station. Some of the gas stations around here, last year, were robbed."
