ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – The Elizabthtown City Council appointed one of their own members, Edna Berger, to serve as mayor of Elizabethtown on Monday.

Berger served as a member of the city council from 1999 to 2006, and again beginning in January 2011.

The council's decision to select a new mayor came after former Elizabethtown Mayor Tim Walker died after suffering a heart attack on June 14, 2013.

Walker started his career in the city of Elizabethtown in 1990 as a firefighter. He left that position for city council in 1997. In 2010, he was elected mayor. During his time running the city he oversaw the opening of Elizabethtown Nature Park and Sports Park.

Berger will serve the remainder of Walker's term until the general election in November 2014.

Since Berger is a city council member, the council's decision created a new vacancy.

The city council will be charged with selecting a replacement to complete the term.
