JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A stretch of road in Jeffersonville is becoming overcrowded and dangerous and the city's mayor said it will only get worse.

Wednesday Mayor Mike Moore asked state lawmakers to help address traffic and safety concerns along a stretch of Highway 62, near the Utica-Sellersburg Road intersection.

Moore said heavy development in the area has created heavy semi traffic, which poses a threat to commuters.

With the opening of the new East End Bridge scheduled in 2016 Moore said he expects traffic to  get worse, "This isn't only for the heavy trucks, this is for the everyday commuter, this is for the moms and dads running their kids to school or running them to basketball practice. It's a pain in the butt right now and we need to get this problem fixed."

Moore has also petitioned the state to lower the speed limit to from 55 miles per hour to 45.
