LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Additional charges have been filed against a man arrested in Texas for a murder in Louisville.

Gerry Lawson was arrested in Dallas on June 26 for the murder of Vernice Aniton. Aniton, 64, was found dead after a fire in her Cypress Street home in the Parkland neighborhood on March 3.

It was originally thought Aniton died from the fire, but an autopsy showed her death occurred before the fire started.

Lawson has now been charged with two counts of arson for intentionally setting fire Aniton's home and because the fire spread to a home next door. Because the neighboring house was occupied at the time, Lawson was charged with a count of wanton endangerment for each of the seven people in that building.

In addition, Lawson was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals because a dog and a cat in Aniton's home died in the fire.

Lawson was returned to Louisville late July 10. He is now being held at Louisville Metro Corrections. He will be arraigned on July 15.
