Twinkies return to Holiday World menu with eating contest

SPENCER CO., IN (WFIE) -

As "the golden sponge cake with the creamy filling" returns to store shelves on Monday, a deep-fried version will be added to the dessert menu at Holiday World.

Holiday World officials say that after scrambling to find a Twinkie supplier, park staffers spent the last few days taste-testing the deep-fried confection, which is topped off with powdered sugar and a drizzle of raspberry sauce.

To kick off the introduction of the new tasty treat, Holiday World will host a series of one-minute TwinkieMania eating contests.

"We've been a Twinkie-free nation since late last year," says park vice president Eric Snow, who master-minded the event. "We hope there's a great enough hunger for their return that we'll find 20 enthusiastic contestants on Monday."

Park guests who'd like to try to eat three deep-fried Twinkies in a minute or less are invited to stop by the Hoosier Celebration Theater at 12:30 p.m. CDT to sign up to compete at 1:00 p.m. If there are more than 20 entries, a drawing will be held to choose the contestants. The winner of each round will receive a HoliCash gift card.

Following the TwinkieMania contest, Deep-Fried Twinkies will be available on the menu at the Funnel Cake Factory in the park's 4th of July section.
