CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
A hot summer day ends in tragedy after two teens went swimming in the lake at Perkins Beach at upper Edgewater Park.
There are no lifeguards posted in that area.
Crews called to the scene just before 3 p.m. Tuesday. The teens were holding onto a log and got carried out 7 1/2 feet.
"They decided they were in too deep made an attempt to swim back to shore. One didn't make it back. One was struggling and went under," says Chief David McNeilly with the Cleveland Fire Department.
Randy Mcmilion was on the beach with friends when it happened. he says he saw the teens go out with a group of adults.
"Next thing I know people are running toward the beach and the coast guard comes up stating that you have to get out of the water. There's been a drowning. Everybody started rushing," says Mcmilon.
Divers found the 15-year-old boys body 20 feet out about an hour after they got the call. Rescuers tell us the water dropped off considerably.
"All the water that we've had for the previous month makes the water all pretty murky. Visibility at this point was about your hand in front of your face. That's about all they had. A lot of it was done by feel," says McNeilly.
Crews have been busy with several drownings in the past month. Gary Guzy with the YMCA of Greater Cleveland has been a lifeguard for more than 15-years. He says safety in the water is critical.
"Always swim with a buddy. Know the area the your going to be swimming in. Know any hazards any currents. How deep is the water, the clarity," says Guzy
