LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Thieves broke into a non-profit for pediatric services and stole children's bicycles. When Home of the Innocents personnel noticed someone was breaking through an eight-foot fence and stealing children's bikes, volunteers came up with their own solution.
Despite oppressive heat, humble contractors and few like minded volunteers knew they had to do something to prevent more thefts.
"Stealing from disadvantaged children is about as low as you can go, but our support system came up with their own way to solve this problem," said Mike O'Brien, the Chief Financial Officer.
Children in crisis find comfort at the Home of the Innocents - a place housing medically fragile, autistic and foster children. Recently, they found bicycles needed shelter as well.
"It was double-sided because not only were the bikes being stolen, but they were also out in the weather. To be able to protect them, we came up with the idea of having a shed put together," said Joe Schifano, part of BB&T's Lighthouse Project, a company-wide community service initiative.
BB&T knew their friends at A Plus Building and Excavating had the manpower. With a donation of timber from 84 Lumber children at Home of the Innocents will have a place to park their ride in just a few days.
"These are the small things that we would probably never do if we had to do it ourselves because resources are extremely tight," O'Brien said.
