Nations veterans in Louisville for annual convention

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Veterans from all over the country have come to the Louisville for the 2013 Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, a Vietnam veteran and two time Purple Heart recipient, thanked the crowd Monday morning for building "the strongest military on earth." Hagel said while our military is strong, finances are not and budget cuts to the military should not be an option.

"To fulfill that obligation now, and in the future, will require us to reshape defense institutions that were designed for different strategic and budgetary realities," said Hagel.

When veterans return home, whether they're on a quest for medical care or a job, Senator Mitch McConnell said it should be America's duty to find it for them.

"Veterans must be able to count on their government and commander in chief," said the Senate Minority Leader.

Senator Rand Paul also spoke during Monday's convention. He said America cannot continue to engage in other countries' civil wars.

"Even if you believe that we should arm fighters in Syria, shouldn't we at the very least have Congress vote on the matter?" Paul said.

Many issues were discussed by speakers but in the beginning and end of every speech, the veterans of foreign wars were thanked continuously for
