MILTON, KY (WAVE) - Workers demolished a 700-foot section of the old Milton-Madison Bridge Tuesday morning.

Crews used controlled explosives to bring the structure down just after 9 a.m.

Transportation officials closed the new U.S. 421 bridge connecting Milton, Kentucky and Madison, Indiana as well as several roads within a 1,000-foot safety perimeter for several hours.

The Ohio River will be closed to boat traffic for up to a full day as workers remove the bridge debris from the water.

The blast originally was scheduled for last week, but the river level was too high to proceed.
