NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – St. Mary's Catholic Academy in New Albany had been open since 1872. Thursday, the school, which closed its doors back in May, held a sale to liquidate the last of the books and desks Thursday.

"It was such a tradition, a heritage for us, I can't believe it," said Vicky Lopp, a St. Mary’s parishioner and alumna.

Lopp was part of a group that pleaded with the Archbishop of Indianapolis not to close St. Mary’s. But with enrollment way down and expenses way up, the Archdiocese decided the school could no longer keep its doors open.

Church workers say the school building may be rented out or utilized by different church ministries in the future.

"I just hate to see it, you know, close, but hopefully it'll be used for good purposes," Lopp said.

Students who attended St. Mary’s have been dispersed to different schools in the area. Although the school is closed, its mission to educate students continued. Teachers from area schools and parents took advantage of the sale.

"I'm going to walk away from here with a lot of books that will enhance our school year," said Donna Dangler, a parent who home schools her three girls. “I'm able to go over there and get a lot of books for a quarter each and some are a dollar and some are two dollars at the most."

St. Mary's will reopen its gymnasium for their final day of sale on Friday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
