LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – When the 2013 Kentucky State Fair opens on August 15, more than 500,000 people will be funneling into the Kentucky Exposition Center.
The state fair always creates a traffic snarl just to park, but this year there will be 6,000 additional parking spaces for use on the weekends. If you don't mind taking a shuttle, you won't have to pay to park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Half of the additional spaces are located across from Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in the Green Lot. The spaces will be open to the public August 16-18 and 23-25. Miller Transportation will rotate 15 buses throughout the weekend.
There will also be a $5 per vehicle parking lot on Phillips Lane located across the street from Gate 1 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
A new entrance point from East Adair Street off Crittenden Drive will be open this year on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Previously, Adair Street was closed to fair goers.
Fair board personnel hope the additional entrance reduces traffic at Gates 2, 3 and 4. State Fair Board President Rip Rippetoe hopes the additional parking will alleviate traffic congestion.
"Not only are you getting better access here, but you're going to have quicker service at the gates," Rippetoe said. "People will be able to enter and exit easier all around that Circle of Champions Boulevard."
Parking fees remain the same on site - each vehicle will be charged $8.00.
