LMPD: 'All hands on deck' after 6 homicides in 4 days

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville Metro Police have "all hands on deck" in their efforts to solve six homicides that happened over a four-day period in the city, according to Lt. Todd Kessinger of the LMPD Homicide Unit during a Monday morning news conference. Kessinger said arrests have been made in only two of the homicides.

Steven Zapata, 53, was arrested in Springfield, TN Friday night for the murder of his wife, 62-year-old Tondelia Zapata. She was found dead inside the couple's Pleasure Ridge Park apartment Thursday afternoon.

Kyle Chambers of Huntingburg, IN was arrested for the Saturday night shooting death of Darius Miller Jr., 17, at 35th & Broadway. Miller was a Waggener High School student.

Police are seeking the public's help solving the other four homicides.

Andre Mayes, 32, of Louisville was found dead of gunshot wounds Thursday after a woman saw a pair of legs sticking out of a wooded area at Brook Bend Way and Leisure Lane near Quail Chase Golf Course. Police said they have leads in this case but have made no arrests.

Gregory Sawyers, 34, was found dead early Saturday morning in the middle of the intersection of Broadway and Clay. The coroner said Sawyers had been shot multiple times. Sawyers was a witness set to testify in the federal case against Ricky Kelly. Kelly is charged with the murder of Laquante Jackson in federal court. At one point, Kelly had been indicted for assaulting Sawyers. Police said they also are following leads in this case.

Dennis Holland, 31, was found shot to death in an alley next to a gas station near Churchill Downs on Sunday. Holland was pronounced dead at the scene behind the Valero gas station on Taylor Boulevard and Central Avenue. Police have questioned several people, but no persons of interest have been identified in the case.

Christopher Colbert, 33, was found suffering from gunshot wounds just after midnight Monday in the 1800 block of W. Oak Street near Dixie Highway and Simmons University. He died a short time later at University of Louisville Hospital.
