Health department meets with food truck owners over new rules

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Louisville Metro health department is moving toward posted inspection ratings on all food trucks. The Department of Public Health and Wellness met with food truck operators about the changes.

In a meeting with representatives of the Louisville Food Truck Association and the Louisville Street Food Alliance, the health department opened discussions to figure out the next steps for increasing health code regulations on food trucks. The health department said the discussion centered on how to convey to the public which food trucks are operating legitimately in a safe and sanitary manner.

That could include ABC letter grades like regular restaurants have, certified food managers and tracking of the food truck locations which change from day to day.

Food truck fan Kelvin Smith said the new system would end the guessing game.

"You know a lot of consumers want to guess about the product, and everyone who sells the product believes their product is the best product," Smith said.  "If that's the case then grade it and prove it."

Health department spokesman Dave Langdon still won't say these changes to food truck health ratings are a done deal although it is certainly looking likely. Langdon said  a decision on whether or not to move forward with the plan will be made by the end of the year.
