Know Before You Go: Week of August 5

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Here's a look at the construction projects that could cause some delays for the week of August 5.

Construction on the new downtown bridge continues. Here's the update on what to expect in the coming days.

  • One lane of the Jefferson Street exit ramp from I-65 south is scheduled to be closed overnight Wednesday, August 7 and Thursday, August 8 for work on temporary lighting. It will reopen by 5:00 the next morning.
  • The right lane of I-64 East from 9th Street to Witherspoon Street is scheduled to close overnight Thursday, August 8 and Friday, August 9 for demolition work. It will reopen by 5:00 the next morning both days.

In Downtown Louisville, Witherspoon Street will be closed during the day Tuesday, August 6 through Friday, August 9 between Preston Street and Clay Street for demolition work. The road will close around 6 a.m. each day and reopen by 5 p.m.

The right lane of Jackson Street is expected to be closed Monday, August 5 through Friday August, 9 from Market Street to Main Street for paving work.

Drivers in Indiana can expect to see the left lane of US 31-South to be closed from under the Brown Station Way overpass to just north of Stansifer Avenue. The closure will continue for the next few weeks as crews construct temporary pavement in the area.

Work on the new East End Bridge will also cause some traffic tie-ups Here's a list of the latest changes to traffic for the week of August 5.

A new traffic signal on KY 841 (Gene Snyder Freeway) about 2,000 feet south of where it intersects with U.S. 42 will be operational beginning Thursday, August 8. The traffic light will affect both northbound and southbound traffic on KY 841. The signal will enable work crews to access KY 841 from the nearby construction area. The light will be coordinated with the existing light at the intersection of KY 841 and U.S. 42. It will turn red, briefly stopping traffic in both directions, when a sensor on the construction roadway is triggered by a construction vehicle.

Blasting to prepare for the new tunnel on the east end of Louisville is scheduled to occur near the intersection of U.S. 42 and KY 841 during the week of August 5 as well.

The dates and approximate times (within 15 minutes) will be:

  • Monday, August 5, at about 12:30 p.m. and about 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 6, at about 12:30 p.m. and about 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 7, at about 12:30 p.m. and about 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 8, at about 12:30 p.m. and about 2 p.m.
  • Friday, August 9, at about 12:30 p.m. and about 2 p.m.

On each day, prior to the blasts, traffic must be stopped for five to 20 minutes for the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Traffic stops during the blasts will occur on KY 841 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and U.S. 42, and on U.S. 42 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and Bridgepointe Boulevard. If unfavorable weather conditions at the time of a scheduled blast are expected, the blast time may be moved to earlier that day. If any such changes occur, they will be posted on, on Twitter @eastendcrossing and at

Keep in mind, all work is subject to change due to weather conditions or other reasons.

Besides bridge construction, road work in the following areas could also affect your drive.

The ramp from I-65 south to St. Catherine Street is now closed until the end of September. The closure is in place to allow for the removal and placement of four pier caps on the I-65 bridge over Brook Street and Kentucky Street.

Shelby County drivers will encounter a temporary closure of Interstate 64 Tuesday evening, August 6, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The westbound lanes of I-64, from Exit 35 to Exit 28, will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. Construction crews will move barrier walls, shifting traffic lanes for westbound lanes as construction continues in that area. The area is expected to be reopened to traffic by 2 a.m. Wednesday, August 7.

The closure will detour westbound I-64 traffic off on Exit 35 on to KY 53. The detour will continue to KY 55X, west on KY 55/Shelbyville Bypass, to U.S. 60W and then to KY 1848 which will lead to I-64 Exit 28 (Simpsonville).  The left turn lane from KY 53N to US 60W will be closed during the closure to aid in traffic flow.

The I-64 Exit 32 westbound entrance ramp will also be closed during this period.

As the I-64 widening project continues in Shelby County, from mile point 32.8 to 27.9, construction will soon enter the next phase necessitating the switch in traffic patterns for the westbound lanes.

The construction project, which will widen the section of I-64 from four lanes to six lanes is scheduled to be completed by July 2014.
