Regardless of where you stand on whether or not Louisville Metro council member Barbara Shanklin should have been removed from office, the evidence is clear that reform is needed on how some of our tax dollars are spent.
The oversight of neighborhood development funds must be greater. Projects council members add to the city budget need particularly stronger scrutiny.
Examine the process now. Waiting for this incident to blow over is unacceptable.
Limiting the amount of discretionary funds provided to each council member is a good start. Setting more focused limits on how that money can be spent is another must change.
The public trust is at stake.
