Fresh produce comes to local convenience store

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Eating healthy is essential for everyone, no matter their financial situation. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department is standing firm to that.

That's why they've turned a Stop & Go in Toledo into a healthy corner store.

Recently, getting fresh produce in the area was not possible. Now, the Healthy Communities Program partnered with Live Well Greater Toledo to turn the Stop & Go on Broadway into a healthy corner store – a convenience store that promotes the sale of healthy foods through stocking and marketing items such as fresh produce.

The Health Department says these stores are placed in low-income communities and neighborhoods because the residents have limited access to public and private transportation, and they often rely on corner stores as their main grocer.

"So if we can bring it into the places where they shop, they have better access to the foods, and hopefully will start eating healthier," said Amy Abodeely, from the Health Department.

There is one other healthy corner store in Toledo: The Save Way located further down on Broadway.
