New coalition aims to brighten children's smiles

NORTHERN KENTUCKY (FOX19) -

A new coalition called Healthy Smiles for Our Kids is working to raise awareness of children's oral health and free resources available.

The program brings together community partners and advocates for education, prevention and treatment.

HealthPoint Family Care members, Children, Inc., and the Northern Kentucky Health Department gathered at HealthPoint Family Care in Latonia Thursday with school representatives to talk about what's currently being done to promote oral health care, projects currently in the works and what else needs to be done.

Officials with the coalition say tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease, yet only 50% of Northern Kentucky children enrolled in Medicaid receive dental services.

As a result, children with dental problems are more likely to be absent from school, to go to a hospital emergency room and to have permanent tooth loss.
