LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - UofL football held it's annual media day on Thursday. The Cards are ranked #9 in the USA Today / Coaches Poll, the highest preseason ranking in school history.
"I said to our players the other day, I said, are we an elitist team, I said, when you think about the Alabama's, you think about the LSU's, you think about the South Carolina's, you think about the Georgia's, and I said, those teams every year expect to be in the top 10," Cards head coach Charlie Strong told WAVE 3 Sports, adding, "and now all of the sudden, everyone is saying, do we really think ourselves, do we really deserve to be there."
Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is a Heisman Trophy candidate. He threw for 3,718 yards and 27 touchdowns as a sophomore. "We're ready for this, and we've put ourselves in this situation and we're just going to play up to the level of expectation," Bridgewater said.
Defensive coordinator Vance Bedford made news two years ago by saying that the program would get the train rolling and everybody needed to get on board. This year he has a challenge for UofL fans.
"The one thing about our fans that we expect this year, we want 50,000 butts in those seats when we take off," Bedford said. "Don't be in the parking lot, and say I'm at a party, get your.....in the seats, 55,000 people cheering us on, make it tough for our opponent. You all are all a part of this train, therefore, be in the stadium, don't be outside, be here."
The Cards open the 2013 season on Sunday, September 1, hosting Ohio at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
