LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Veronica Willis was checking out a customer at LoMart when she heard the exchange of gunfire from across the street.

"All of sudden I heard three rounds, boom, boom, boom," she said. "Somebody hollered ‘Oh somebody is setting off fireworks' and I said ‘No that's not fireworks, that's gun shots."

The McDonald's on the corner of Greenwood Road and Terry Road quickly became the center of an officer – involved shooting investigation. Police said two detectives were watching a man they suspected in Paul Barber's murder. The 21-year-old was killed Monday when a group of armed men broke into an apartment on Crawford Crossing Place.

Police say around 6 p.m. Thursday the two detectives were approaching a silver Cadillac, that's when they say the man they were following started shooting at them from the back seat.

"The officers did return fire at this point in time," said Sgt. Robert Biven, LMPD.
"We do know that the suspect did suffer non-life threatening gunshot wounds. There was a female occupant in the car that we believe suffered a gunshot wound to her hand, both of them were transported to the hospital where they are currently receiving medical treatment."

The driver was not injured and is currently in police custody being questioned. A stray bullet hit a SUV sitting at the intersection shattering a window. Police said remarkably nobody else was hurt.

"I've lived in this area all my life and the whole world, it's just getting crazy, shootings every night and then in Valley Station, PRP, it's just getting crazy," said Willis.

No officers were injured in this shooting. The two detectives involved will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The suspect's name has not been released. Police said an officer is by his side at University Hospital.
