Springfield police nab alleged cell phone robber

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A rash of cell phone robberies in Springfield had many on high alert this week. Springfield police said several women were robbed of their phones while out jogging in the city.

"These women were accosted where they would come up and rip the cell phones off their shoulders or their hands while they were listening to music," said Sgt. John Delaney

The last robbery happened Thursday afternoon and that's when Delaney said two officers who witnessed the attack helped assist with catching the suspect.

"Two off-duty corrections officers from Connecticut observed the theft and assisted in the arrest. Now the suspect we got yesterday is being tied in with all six robberies that took place," said Delaney.

That suspect is 19-year-old David Beadle.

The Springfield teen was handcuffed as he was lead into a Hampden County courtroom Friday afternoon.

He is facing charges of unarmed robbery and was held on $50,000 cash bail.

Delaney said there has been a rise in cell phone thefts nationwide and kiosks like the Eco ATM, at the Eastfield Mall in Springfield, allows anyone to drop off any phone and receive money for it.

"It's one of those things where they're worth a lot of money you can take the sim card out and there's kiosks where you can drop a cell phone in and get money for it."

But Delaney said Thursday's arrest has stopped the robberies in Springfield.

"It was a small little crime wave that came to a screeching halt yesterday," said Delaney.

CBS 3 Spingfield reach out to Eco ATM on the matter.

The company released a statement that reads, "We have the best in class security. A driver's
license, thumb print and photo I.D. are required. We fully cooperate with police in any circumstance. If the phone is stolen, it will be returned to the rightful owner."
