LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A longtime neighborhood center that has served the Smoketown and Shelby Park areas for over a century will soon be closing its doors.

Officials with the Presbyterian Community Center have confirmed to WAVE 3 News they will cease operations on August 30.

Located on the corner of Hancock and Jacob Streets, Presbyterian Community Center opened in 1898 and provided social services, childcare, child development and educational enhancement to the communities it served, along with sports and recreational activities.

According to Lavel Wright, the current director stepped down on August 4. Wright told WAVE 3 News economic issues and the closing of the Sheppard Square public housing complex were driving factors in the decision to close the facility.
