LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Several JCPS teachers committed their Saturday to cleaning up area bus stops in the Portland neighborhood to make sure children aren't surrounded by litter. Their motivation came from a teacher who noticed parents couldn't make it to an open house.

Chenoweth teacher Scott Whitenack called on his colleagues to canvass a few neighborhoods where students live. More than 20 educators agreed and used the opportunity to meet parents who were home.

"We thought it'd be a great thing to do before the school year started and clean up where kids are going to be standing at the bus stops so it looks a bit nicer for them," Whitenack said, who teaches 4th grade.

Their first assignment was 38th and Bank - where children come and go every day. "It's a great feeling to give back to an area where our kids spend a lot a good part of their day when they're not at Chenoweth," Russ Hockenbury said.

Principal Penny Deatrick also volunteered to pick up trash near bus stops and introduce herself to parents along the way. "I think it sends a great message to our kids. It lets our kids know we value them - not just when they get to school and dropped off," Deatrick said.

They hope their efforts provide a clean slate on the first day of school. JCPS begins classes Tuesday, August 20.
