PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A new look at a Phoenix cold case hopes to give police a new lead.

The biggest lead detectives had to solve the 2003 murder of Mack Rue, 23, was a vehicle description of the shooter's car.

On Aug. 22, 2003, Rue was gunned down while driving his green Plymouth Neon on I-10 in West Phoenix between 67th and 75th avenues at around 10 a.m. Police believe the murder was the result of a road rage incident.

According to witness testimony in the Silent Witness file, the suspect vehicle was spotted speeding and swerving down I-17 and I-10 westbound, following Rue's green Neon when one of two people in that car opened fire, striking Rue once in the chest.

"Help! Help!" were Rue's last words recorded on 911 tape.

Over the years, the detailed witness description of the suspect vehicle remained in the shadows.

"[Witnesses] described it to a 'T,'" Rue's mother, Melynda Smith, said.

Digging deeper into the case, a Phoenix police detective assigned to the file described the suspect car as a white, midsized car in rough shape. The front hood of that vehicle didn't close completely and had a visible gap on the front end.

"I miss him, I love him," Smith said of her son.

Without an arrest, every birthday and holiday is particularly tough for Smith and her family. Rue was her only son.

"We don't get to celebrate birthdays, Christmas." she said. "But whoever did this does."

If any of this revived information sounds familiar to you, or you have seen a car with a similar description, contact Silent Witness. Any information leading to an arrest carries a reward of up to $11,000.
