TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

"Don't let the bed bugs bite" became a real life expression for an area man. According to him, his used bed purchase came with an unwanted bonus, and his situation only seemed to worsen when he tried to return it.

Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus and Detroit all make up the top 10 list of U.S. cities being invaded by bed buds, according to Terminex. In July, the bed bug roulette rolled to a stop in the Glass City, courtesy of a local store - at least that's what one customer claims.

While he wishes to remain anonymous, his pictures are proof. The man says he paid $95 for a used, bed bug infested mattress at the Monster Resale Shop in Toledo along Upton Avenue. While some may say, "That's what you get for buying a bed at a second-hand store," some say not so fast. Consumers have protection against unsanitized, unlicensed and untagged materials at the hands of business owners. So Toledo News Now's Jenna Lee went undercover with a hidden camera to investigate.

During the visit to the Monster Resale Shop July 10, an employee offered to sell Jenna a used queen mattress, headboard and box spring for $125. When asked if the bed had been sanitized, the employee said, "We're supposed to have tags, but the lady never came back. I don't know what the deal is. The state is pretty lax."

Jenna then reached out to the Ohio Department of Commerce to inquire. Spokesman Matt Mullins said the Monster Resale Shop was not registered with the state to sell used mattresses, so the department sent an inspector to follow-up on the matter July 17.

"We found that they were selling items that were regulated by us and were required to be a second-hand dealer. We informed the owner of that and gave information about registration and other requirements for properly sanitizing and tagging the items they were going to be selling. The owner stated they weren't interested in being a second-hand dealer. He was then ordered to remove all items from their sales floor," said Mullins.

Our hidden camera dropped by again July 26 to find used mattresses stacked up against walls and grouped on floors for sale.

"It is violation of Ohio law to sell these items when you're not registered and they've not been properly sanitized," said Mullins.

The owner was also issued two letters from the Ohio Department of Commerce, ordering him to comply by removing several items, including mattresses.

The most recent inspection by the department was conducted Aug. 12. During that time, the owner said the store was in the process of disposing of the mattresses and any other items without a red tag and license number.

The department plans to return to the store again soon.

Our calls to the Monster Resale Shop for comment have gone unanswered.

The bed bug victim encourages consumers to research prior to purchase and check the Better Business Bureau's website. As of today, its review of the Monster Resale Shop includes an "F" rating, alerting potential customers of the store's unresolved complaints. The Better Business Bureau of Toledo requested background information from the business, but it too has not received a response.

The Department of Commerce is asking the public to file bed bug complaints via its hotline number 614-644-3964.
