Mayor greets students, new high school wing opens

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Jefferson County Public School students went headed to class Tuesday morning, 102,000 to be exact.

Superintendent Dr. Donna Hargens and Mayor Greg Fischer greeted students at Tully Elementary.

Students at Eastern High School arrived to a newly expanded wing that holds an open hall, an auditorium a library and classrooms.

Principal Lana Kaelin said they needed more space because of the growing number of students, "We have a lot of IT classrooms and Business classrooms. That's our magnet program so we tried to expand upon that."

Students said they're excited for the new wing, for two years it was under construction.

JCPS says the first day of school ran smoothly.
