LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Volunteers are continuing to work to repair the home of a wounded warrior.

Sergeant John Gatz's home was full of volunteers on Friday and Saturday as VFW, UPS pilots and between 20 to 25 St. Xavier High School students came to donate their time.

When Sgt. Gatz returned from Afghanistan after suffering a traumatic brain injury he discovered his family's home of 12 years was filled with poisonous mold.

Gatz moved his family into a small apartment. That's when Service For Peace stepped in to help along with Operation Helping Heroes.

In July the money volunteers had to repair Sgt. Gatz home ran out and they were in need of another $10,000. WAVE 3 News reported the lack of funds and that night the VFW called and offered the money needed to fix the home. Since then the budget has gone up to $125,000 thanks to donations.

Wednesday, volunteers poured the front porch on his home. The Gatz family is expected to be able to move back into their home in four to six weeks.
