LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Three days before New Year's Eve this year, the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky will meet at Rupp Arena. Two days after Thanksgiving next year Louisville and Kentucky will meet at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
The holiday atmosphere will now surround both the basketball and football rivalry games starting next year, as the UofL-UK gridiron game will be the last game of the regular season schedule for both teams, rather than the first or third.
The move accommodates requests from the SEC and ACC, Louisville's new home beginning next year.
So if the Cardinals plan on competing in the ACC championship football game next year, they will be doing it a week after their biggest rivalry game of the year. Same for Kentucky and the SEC championship game.
But at least the rivalry will continue and that is terrific. With conference expansion, that is not always a given. Kentucky won the first six times these two teams met on the football field, but Louisville has won 11 of the last 19 games.
Let's hope this game becomes the conference championship game or bowl tune up game for both teams in the future.
