Grueling Ironman competition is underway in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - IronMan Louisville participants entered the water about 6:45 Sunday morning under clear skies and cool temperatures.
The 2.4 mile swim course started at the dock adjacent to Tumbleweed restaurant and finished downstream by Joe's Crab Shack, just past The Great lawn. That part of the competition was projected to be about 2 hours and 20 minutes. The water temperature was ideal, in the mid-80s.
The next leg of the competition is the 112-mile bike race, which takes athletes out of Jefferson County into Oldham and Henry counties. It includes a two-loop section through historic downtown LaGrange filled with lots of rolling hills. The final leg of the event is a marathon run, 26.2 miles.
Participants will finish the race at Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville. Some of the first competitors are expected to finish around 4 p.m. Athletes have 17 hours to complete the course.
