LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A semi carrying a load of batteries overturned Monday morning in a construction zone along Interstate 65 in Hart County, causing all northbound traffic to close while a hazardous materials crew worked to remove the cargo.

Drivers were being detoured off I-65 at Cave City (Exit 53) onto KY 90 east to US 31W north to KY 70 east to US 31E north to KY 61 (Lincoln Parkway) north. They were rejoining the interstate at Exit 91 in Elizabethtown. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, GPS devices may suggest alternate routes, but they were expected to be congested with local traffic.

Drivers traveling through to Elizabethtown may with to exit I-65 in Bowling Green via the William Natcher Parkway north to Western Kentucky Parkway east and rejoin I-65 in Elizabethtown.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m. EDT at mile marker 56, just inside the Hart County line. Neither the driver's condition nor the cause of the crash was immediately known.

The interstate closure was expected to last through at least 7:30 p.m. Monday. Southbound traffic was not affected.
