Retired court officer takes stand in his own defense

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Retired court officer Jay DiRico took to the witness stand Monday morning to testify in his own defense.

The 42-year-old is accused of assaulting Chicopee police Officer Jeffrey Couture back in April of 2012.

The charges stem from an alleged attack on Couture that occurred when DiRico's ex-girlfriend came with the officer to DiRico's home to gather some of her belongings.

The retired court officer told the jury he did not provoke the attack.

DiRico's testimony comes in stark contrast from Couture's on Thursday when he said he pushed DiRico to stop a pending attack of the ex-girlfriend. Couture told the jurors that during the confrontation DiRico tried to strangle him.

Also, during his testimony on Monday DiRico said he was abused by the police after he was handcuffed. He said he suffered several severe injuries as a result. His story of the events that day is entirely different from what Couture previously told jurors had happened.

Among those in attendance in the courtroom were several Chicopee police officers including the city's police chief.

The case is expected to go to the jury sometime on Tuesday.
