LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Two people suffered serious injuries Monday when a black Honda traveling at a high rate of speed slammed into a cab in south Louisville minutes after police tried to pull over the Honda, according to a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The crash happened around 1:24 p.m. at South 7th Street and Oleanda Avenue.

LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said an officer witnessed the speeding Honda westbound on the Watterson Expressway/Interstate 264.

"The officer attempted to try to pull [the driver] over around the Taylor Boulevard and Watterson Expressway exit," Mitchell said. "That car proceeded, still at a high rate of speed. The officer at that point terminated his pursuit of that vehicle."

Minutes later, Mitchell said, police responded to the accident involving the Honda crashing into an Orange Cab at South 7th Street and Oleanda.

"The guy was ejected that was driving that black car ended up in the passenger side hanging out the back window," said Dina Lane, witness.

Both drivers were rushed to University of Louisville Hospital. Mitchell said the driver of the Honda was in critical condition and that the cab driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department policy on pursuits, a chase must be justified. The officer must decide if getting a suspect in custody outweighs the dangers that could be ahead. The officer must also have a reason to believe that the suspect being chased has committed or is wanted for a violent felony.

Investigators haven't released if that applied in this case, but once the Honda took an exit off the Watterson, the officer decided to stop going after him.

A Louisville Metro Police traffic unit was investigating.
