JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Indiana is launching a statewide public awareness campaign about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
During a stop in Clark County on Monday, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller talked about a new website that his office is rolling out called bitterpill.in.gov. The goal is to educate people about the signs and symptoms of drug abuse and addiction.
"This is a huge problem," said Zoeller, "and this is why we called it bitter pill because this is a bitter pill for our communities to swallow, the number of drug overdoses to prescription drugs, especially among our teenagers and people who are experimenting."
The event comes just days after news that Indiana is considering laws similar to those in Kentucky that make it harder to get drugs like painkillers from doctors. It would require things such as drug tests for patients and doctor's appointments every four months.
Zoeller said every 25 minutes someone dies from a prescription drug overdose.
"This is a bitter pill for our communities to swallow," said Zoeller.
