LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Louisville library was given a green award Wednesday, but it wasn't cash. The Fairdale branch was awarded with an LEED silver certification.

The certification means the library was designed to be more eco-friendly by incorporating advanced green technology and architectural design to save energy.

Green features include geothermal heating and cooling, environmentally-friendly furniture and flooring and energy-efficient windows and lights.

Louisville Free Public Library Director Craig Buthod said, "We absolutely think that we are setting the tone for future buildings. Our new library that we are building in the Southwest area on Dixie Highway will have many of the same features and we'll have, we will learn from what we did here to make the Southwest Library even better."

The Newburg library branch became Louisville Metro Government's first LEED certified building in 2009.
