SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A West Virginia "hometown hero" has returned to her roots in Ohio. A Sylvania Franciscan sister has given 55 years of her life helping and inspiring others. While an illness has forever changed sister Pat Taube's life, she says it's for the better.

A common infection on her 75th birthday last month has left Sister Pat with no hands and feet. Although many people would ask, "why me?" Sister Pat refuses to do so and says her faith and passion for life is stronger than ever.

Some people consider Sister Pat a modern day saint. The West Virginia hospital chaplain has spent decades helping the homeless and people struggling with addiction. She was recently given the honor of Hometown Hero back in Huntington, WV, but on July 6, she suddenly fell ill with an infection that quickly took over her body. In order to keep blood going to her heart, doctors told her she would need to lose her hands and feet.

"They saved my life. That was the important thing. So, after that, I had to make the decision about amputations," explained Sister Pat.

Although it was a difficult decision, she says it allowed her to live and tell her story.

"We can do the best we can with our life, and I'm trying to do the best I can with life," she said.

The once very active sister says God has used her in all the ways she's ever wanted. Now she's passing the ball on to others, who will become her hands and feet since she no longer needs them.

"I know that whatever is next for me, God is with me, and that's going to be the most wonderful thing in the world," said Sister Pat.

Sister Pat has received more than 100 cards from several states and has read every one of them.
