HODGENVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The body of a woman who disappeared in floodwaters over the weekend in LaRue County has been recovered and identified.

LaRue County Sheriff Merle Edlin said after heavy rains Saturday, the couple went for a ride on their 4-wheeler around 10:30 p.m. When the couple tried to cross South Otter Creek, the 4-wheeler flipped and the water swept them away. The man was able to escape, but he could not hang on to the woman.

"He got out he could still hear her hollering," said Edlin. "Of course he looked for her immediately, but at that time he was trapped."

The man spent nearly two hours trapped on a bank before other friends at the cabin could reach him.

The body of Valarie Holt, 28, was found Sunday afternoon in Rolling Fork River, about six miles from the site of the crash. A preliminary autopsy suggests drowning was the cause of Holt's death.
