Teacher takes Alford plea over disorderly conduct arrest

Posted: Updated:

BRANDENBURG, KY (WAVE) - A teacher is back in the classroom after being accused of assaulting his estranged wife.

The Meade County Attorney tells WAVE 3 News that Michael Schwartz, a teacher at Meade County High School, was originally charged with rape and assault accused of forcing himself on his estranged wife.

According to the county attorney, Schwartz took an Alford plea on a reduced charge of disorderly conduct. The rape charges were dropped.

An Alford plea means the suspect does not admit guilt, but agrees there is enough evidence for a conviction.

John Millay, superintendent of the Meade County Schools, said Schwartz returned to teaching on August 26.  Millay said student safety is their primary concern and the school system believes student safety has not been compromised.
