Court documents paint a scary chain of events for a Portland couple who were walking home from a MAX stop last Friday when they were confronted by a machete-wielding man in a "Jason-style" hockey mask.
Robert Howell and Nissa Gilligan said they were being followed by a man while walking home from the MAX stop at Southeast Flavel Street.
When they first noticed the man, Howell and Gilligan started walking faster and cut through the parking lot of Mt. Scott Church of God. Howell told police the man continued to follow them, and that he disguised his voice by using an English accent, saying he was lost and needed help.
As the man continued to follow them, Howell said he decided to confront him, turning around to say, "What did you need, can we help you with something?"
Police said Howell then noticed the man's mask, and began calling 911, and he soon saw a machete sticking out of the sleeve of the man's coat.
Court documents also said Howell saw something in the man's hands, and he appeared to be trying to light it.
Howell and Gilligan turned to run away, authorities said, and the man threw the Molotov cocktail at them while saying "Merry [expletive] Christmas."
Witnesses said they didn't see the suspect or victims, but they heard the glass bottle break and looked up the street to see a large fireball "about 20 feet in size." They also heard a man yelling, "Happy [expletive] new year."
Portland police and firefighters responded to 106th Avenue and Rex Street at 10:30 p.m. and found multiple razor blades, Styrofoam and broken glass at the scene.
Officers said they found the suspect, identified as Kazimerz Garski, a few blocks away, and he had a Jason-style hockey mask, a machete, a stun gun, a dagger, a throwing star and a knife in his possession. He told police he was out jogging, and needed the weapons because he was recently attacked by homeless people who live under the bridge on Flavel Street, according to court documents.
Eventually, police said, Garski admitted to throwing the Molotov cocktail, which he said was designed to be a diversion. He said he was threatened by the victims because there were two of them and he was trying to scare them, investigators said.
Garski was arraigned on charges of attempted assault, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful manufacturing of a destructive device and menacing Tuesday. His bail was set at $70,000.
