There are more new developments in the case of Erica Parsons, the missing 15-year-old girl from Salisbury who hasn't been seen in nearly two years.
On Thursday, the attorney for Erica's adoptive family told WBTV that he believes Erica's biological mother, Carolyn Parsons, holds the key to solving this mystery of Erica's disappearance.
Erica Parsons was reported missing in July, by her brother, after she was last seen in November 2011.
Carlyle Sherrill says that Erica's adoptive mother, Casey Parsons, has just now come to realize that the woman referred to as "Nan" may not be who she claimed to be. Casey says she gave Erica to live with in November of 2011.
"Exactly," Sherrill told WBTV. "Now she's embarrassed she felt that way, probably, I think it's finally dawning on her that Nan's not who she thought she was."
Nan was supposed to be Erica's biological grandmother. The Parsons claim they took Erica to live with Nan, in Asheville, after meeting her on two other visits and deciding they were comfortable with her.
Investigations by law enforcement, media, and even syndicated talk show host Dr. Phil never found such a person.
The Parsons' lawyer says Nan was introduced to the Parsons through biological mother Carolyn Parsons.
"That's who brought Nan to them, and probably that's who knows who Nan is," Sherrill said.
Sherrill also spoke about Facebook messages between the birth mother and the adoptive mother that seemed to contradict the timeline given by Casey Parsons.
The Parsons claim they last saw Erica in November of 2011, and last spoke to her in February of 2012, but in a Facebook message from March 2013, Casey Parsons tells Carolyn that Erica is taking driver's ed, that she's gone away for the weekend but will be back in a couple of days and that there was a family picture made recently.
"I didn't really see a contradiction. I think Casey's message was that Erica was fine and it's been her message throughout that she left her in good hands and that was always her belief up until just recently," Sherrill added.
Sherrill also said that messages supposedly written by Erica Parsons - under Casey's Facebook account - where she tells her biological mother that she loves the Parsons and thinks of them as her only family, prove that Erica was living in a happy home.
On Thursday the FBI told WBTV that all of the items taken during a search of the Parsons property three weeks ago, including the red stained wall pieces from inside the house, were sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.
While the processing was given a high priority, a spokesperson told WBTV that they can't really speak to any timetable about when any results would be available.
Anyone with any information about the disappearance of Erica Parsons or her whereabouts is asked to call the Rowan Sheriff's Office at 704-216-8700.
