LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The first ever free movie event on the KFC Yum! Center plaza kicked off on Thursday night.

"This is probably the coolest thing I've ever done in this city," said Rachel Abell, who attended movie with her family.

At a place that's known for basketball, Thursday night it was all about baseball for the showing of The Sandlot.

"Sandlot is an all time favorite of mine and he grew up loving it and he grew up loving it," said Abell.

Louisville Downtown Partnership came up with the idea for the free movie event.

"There are a number of other cities that do outdoor movies, but they have to go to the expense of screens, etc, so we have this great resource, so we've been talking with the Yum! Center folks and AEG and they were all in and said, ‘oh this will be so much fun,'" said Rebecca Matheny.

Be sure to bring your own chairs and there are some refreshments on hand for purchase. Just over 50 people showed up for the event's premier, not bad since there hasn't been a lot of buzz.

"I take great solace in the fact that Waterfront Wednesday's started literally with 100 people in attendance and now we see what they've built over time, so we're really hoping to do that," said Matheny.

It's all about sports for this first series. The movie Hoosiers is slated for Thursday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. On September 19 they will take a break while Disney on Ice is here, but the movies will be back the following Thursday through October 10.
