OWENSBORO, KY (WAVE) - A 5-K run was held in honor of Lane Goodwin, the Kentucky teenager who lost his battle with cancer almost one year ago.

Lane's fight brought awareness to childhood cancer. The Thumbs Up for Lane Goodwin Childhood Cancer Foundation hosted the Tri-State Goes Gold for Children 5K Run/Walk on Saturday in Owensboro. More than 100 people took part and many others volunteered for the cause.

"One of his requests to me and his mothers was to find a cure and a cause and help try to find a way to defeat this monster. That's what he always called it. And that's what we're out here doing," said George Goodwin, Lane's father.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month so the Lane Goodwin Foundation will be hosting a number of different events, the next one being on Friday, September 13. It is a golf scramble at the Players Club in Henderson.

For information on how you can participate in upcoming events, visit the foundation on Facebook.
