LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville Slugger Field is in the process of getting a new playing surface.

Workers stared laying down the new turf Tuesday. Greg Galiette, senior vice president of the Louisville Bats, said the team has tried a Bluegrass playing field, but the turf didn't hold up well with the humid summer days in the Ohio Valley.

Galiette said the Bats found Bermuda grass which was developed at Oklahoma State University in 2007. The Bermuda grass will be combined with an overseeding of rye which they say will keep it green and healthy next summer.

"Then when those hot summer months really kick in whereas the bluegrass would be fighting with that all summer long, battling those diseases in the area, now we really have a stronger more vibrant grass that can really put up with those hot humid days," Galiette said.

Crews will put down 100,000 square feet of grass. Galiette said the field should be ready by the middle of October.
